About the numbat
(Myrmecobius fasciatus)
The West Australian fauna emblem and our favourite little striped creature.
Numbats once could be found across much of Australia’s south. Since colonisation, their numbers have plummeted. Now only found in a handful of locations in Western Australia’s South West, they sadly feature on the IUCN Red List as fauna that is likely to become extinct.
Not known for being a push over, a number of dedicated West Australian’s have come together to form community led action groups focusing on ensuring a future for the numbat. With emphasis on feral cat and fox control, numbat population monitoring, impact studies and of course assisting government bodies such as DBCA and Perth Zoo, these groups have helped navigate a path forward, away from extinction for our stripey friends.
Numbat populations have shown a marked uptick since the early 2000’s. A successful breeding program by Perth Zoo and collared releases of numbubs (baby numbats) becoming somewhat of a yearly occurrence.
